When talking Bulldogs, French or English you need to talk about dog food. It is responsible for about 80% of all problems relating to skin, digestion, coat, teeth and bowel issues in these and many other breeds. This page is going to be dedicated solely to this subject. It's extremely important to read and understand this page if you are looking to buy a bulldog of any kind.
Let's first talk about kibble food...this is the hard dry food that is sold in many different places. There are many many different brands out there so lets cut away the garbage foods right away....anything you can buy in a grocery store, walmart or department store of any kind is all garbage. The main ingredient in these foods is usually a chicken by product. I am going to explain for those of you who are not sure what this term means. Chicken by-product: this is the basically all the stuff from the chicken that humans dont want to eat...."beaks, feathers, nails!" This kind of very low quality protien is so extremely hard for dogs to digest that they usually will start to develop an entolerance to this food which presents itself as allergies. The dogs will have many symptoms such as but not limited to: soft stools, periodic vomitting, bad breath, bad gas, constant ear infections, feet, groin or bodychewing, runny eyes, hot spots and cronic hair loss. Because we dont know this is caused by the food we bring them to the vet where they prescribe treatment after treatment for the individual symptoms, overlooking the reason they are not getting better and that lies in the food dish at home. Dog food is made up in quantiy by the ingredients on the listed ingredients portion of your bag, usually on the side. So what I mean is if the first ingredient is corn, then the majority of the food is corn. If the second ingredient is chicken by-product then after the corn this is the most prominent ingredient in that food and so on.....so the top four or five ingredients is what your food is made of...everything else is just added touches. Ok so we covered how to avoid the really bad foods....stay away from the grocery store foods etc. Well then you would think if I buy my food from the vet then it should be awsome.....NOPE! sorry in seven years of university the vets take 40 hrs of nutrition....that is the week where they are not having to take in the gazillion mountains of information and perhaps even a time to catch up on other areas... You get the point. Most vets recommend a food made by a company called hills. I myself am not a big fan of this food, I have never had any success with any food this comany offers and the reason vets promote it is because for every one product they sell of hills, hills donates a dollar back to the vet association.....so its kind of like the vets have sold their soles.. I will say this:....many vets are coming around to other methods of feeding and are starting to see that food can be a major part of a sick dogs problems. Ok so we covered the vet foods....but we have not really talked about what the ingredients are that are bad.....well any kind of by-product is definately bad...corn is a high....high allergent in dogs! PERIOD no matter how small they grind it...it doesnt digest...we know that ourselves. Any kind of grains are hard for our dogs to process...
I currently feed a raw dog food diet. There is nothing better for you dog..in my eyes. I have seen the results myself.
